The role of INSIGHT in creating change
If you’ve never been to therapy, or if you’ve only had CBT, you might wonder - how does psychotherapy actually work? Well, assuming you want something to change in your life, what is helpful is getting some insight into how you work.
So, working backwards from what it is that you would like to be different - we get to: what is the underlying pattern, and how did this pattern arrive in the first place? This is the insight we need to gain. It’s simply uncovering the ‘why’ of what your patterns are. And typically we can’t see these patterns for ourselves, we go to therapy to have ourselves mirrored back to us.
The way I work together with you to start to create that deeper understanding, starts by gaining a picture of what your early life was like. The social context and key experiences of your childhood combine into your own ‘private logic’ about yourself, others, the world, and what you had to do to survive. We’ll also identify how that private logic affects your life today. It can be quite shocking to realise we’ve been running the same program since we were 5!
As we bring life-long subconscious patterns into your conscious awareness - insight - so starts the process of unlocking the power of that pattern if it no longer serves you. With the insight key firmly in the lock ready to open the door to the change you want, we work on small experiments with behaving differently.
It all starts with insight.
